I've only been flying for 37 years in 52 different airplanes, from gliders to fighters and have been a CFII for most of that time. I only have one Shuttle orbiter landing, so take my review with a grain of salt. The author seems to glorify risk taking and his ability to survive the consequences of his poor judgment. By page 152 when he writes about diving into thunderstorms due to get-home-itis (when he clearly should have landed), I had pretty much had it with this guy. It wasn't so much that he took so many unnecessary risks, but that he did it IN OTHER PEOPLES' NEW AIRPLANES. I wonder how many airplane owners knew he was out there in moderate to severe turbulence, pushing the G limits on their airplanes, just because their ferry pilot didn't want to stay an extra night in a hotel? I wonder if he ever advised the mechanic on delivery to inspect for bent metal or cracks? Boy I would be pissed if it was my airplane!So at the end of the day, this book is an interesting read. But only as long as you take it for what it is: a case study in some of the most unprofessional decision making I've ever read about from a paid pilot who should be taking care of the equipment. If you are an instructor pilot, tell your students to do the opposite of Kerry McCauley's poor decisions in the book. Dumb luck is not cool. It's just dumb.
